It’s Here! Opening Night!

90th Anniversary Party Wrap-up

Thank you to everyone who attended the 90th Anniversary Party last night. The music, food and drinks were excellent. It was so great to see all the people involved with Theatre Tulsa’s past and present (and future).

Elegance from Dirty Hands and Hard Labor

Our office manager, Sally, was talking to a Theatre Tulsa supporter on the phone the other day. She was recalling her experience performing in TT’s “My Fair Lady” in 1980. She said it was “the time in her life when she felt the most elegant.” This gives me sweet chills.

Elegance. What a luxury to feel elegant in this world! Right? How lucky are we to experience the elegance of the theatre? Whether it’s dressing up to attend a show with family and friends, having conversation and a cocktail after the show, taking the stage under the bright lights, or relishing in the laughter and applause and community we develop among audiences, actors, technicians and volunteers. There IS a certain elegance in the theatre – a joyful, unique, communal spirit that isn’t found anywhere else.

True, there is A LOT about theatre that is not elegant. I’m thinking of the paint, the nails, the needle pricks while sewing costumes, the “no’s” you get when asking for support, the “no’s” you get when auditioning, the paperwork, the fundraising, the picking up trash, the search for parking, the finishing the last light cue at 2:00 am after a 16 hour tech rehearsal… The list goes on.

But, at the center of it is delight, accomplishment, revelry, indulgence, suspension of disbelief, a journeying to other places only to find in two hours you are right back home, right where you belong. Theatre takes us, in so many ways, beyond ourselves. Think of how many people across the world NEVER get to experience any of this through the art of the theatre. And never will.

We are lucky. For 90 years, ups and downs, Tulsans have had an opportunity for elegance in their backyard. What a legacy, what an accomplishment! This indeed something to celebrate! Cheers to 90 more elegant years for Theatre Tulsa!
