Jim Watts of the Tulsa World wrote a great preview of Theatre Tulsa New Stage’s collaboration with Odeum Theatre Company and Theatre Pops to produce a one-weekend only production of “8″.
The Supreme Court began hearing arguments this morning on whether gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry in the Proposition 8 California case that could transform the law nationwide.
Theatre Tulsa’s New Stage company is proud to team up with two other local theatres (Odeum and Theatre Pops) to interact with this moment of living history through our upcoming production of “8,” a dramatic retelling of the original “Prop. 8″ trial based on court transcripts.
Each reading will include a talkback session that will combine discussions of the performance with perspectives on religion and the law from special guests.
This production will not only entertain but also open a local dialogue on a highly topical national debate.
“8″ will have three performances, April 25-27, at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at the Tulsa PAC box office or at www.myticketoffice.com

Media Release: Three Tulsa Theatres Announce Collaborative Production of Dustin Lance Black’s New Play “8”
Theatre Tulsa’s New Stage, in Collaboration with Odeum and Theatre POPS, Joins Nationwide Productions of Landmark Marriage Equality Play
TULSA, Okla. (March. 25, 2012) – Theatre Tulsa’s New Stage, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact, is proud to announce a one-weekend-only reading of “8,” a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8.
The script was written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film “Milk” and the film “J. Edgar”. Black’s “8” is based on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
The production and casts will combine the talents of three local theatres, Theatre Tulsa’s New Stage company, Odeum Theatre Company and Theatre Pops.
So long, fare thee well! Pip pip, cheerio! “Oliver!” loaded out of the Tulsa PAC this weekend after a two-week sold-out run.
