Waiting for LeftyWritten by Clifford Odet
Why choose this old play for production in 2012? As Harry Fatt and other characters in Waiting for Lefty say: “Just read the papers!” All around us the same circumstances are still very much alive as in 1935: attempts at a variety of levels to undo and quash unions; poverty, joblessness and loss of homes due to corruption and mismanagement in the business and banking worlds; and the struggles for equality via the world-changing protests in the Middle East as well as the “Occupy” movements from east coast to west here in America. Waiting for Lefty offered hope at a time when things seemed to be reaching their darkest, and does so once again in the present day. It provides us all with reminders that behind every door there’s a story, that every job is uncertain, yet through collective efforts the great mass of people in any circumstance can prevail. Clifford Odets’s play is a true American classic, taking on all these aspects in one compact work of art; it would be encouraging, indeed, to know that in some future time the ideas in the play have become outmoded because a fair and caring society has prevailed. We can all only do what we can and hope. This production is dedicated to the memory of Vaclav Havel, former president of the Czech Republic and leader of the “Velvet Revolution”
