Theatre Tulsa is funded through tickets sales and small grants. Each production costs us an average of $5-7,000 to produce. A musical costs closer to $10,000. We love what we do. We love being able to provide high quality theatre such as Urinetown, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Waiting for Lefty and The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. We also want to fulfill our mission of creating opportunities for the people of the Tulsa area to experience theatre arts in a hands on fashion. Over 75% of the cast in our first two shows this year were new to Theatre Tulsa. Several of the backstage crew were also new. We are making good things happen from our little space in the Brady District.
Everyone has been touched by recent economic struggles. We understood that ticket sales would be effected, so we held our prices for the year and offered Living Social or other discounts for each show. As good as the turnout has been, we have not been able break even on either show. And we needed to do better than break even in order to maintain our current office, costume and scene shops.
