Summer 2019

Theatre Tulsa’s renowned education programs are back this summer with our Broadway Academy for students ages 5-18! Our 5-week camp-style intensives give students professional, recreational, and introductory-level training in performance-based theatre catered to their age and skill level. All three of our programs will culminate in fully-staged productions of Aladdin Jr. and Rent School Edition at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, Williams Theatre. To suit our students’ varying needs, we have three exciting programs to offer:

Broadway Beginners and Broadway Bootcamp: Aladdin Jr.

Theatre Tulsa Academy’s summer program will produce the classic musical Aladdin Jr. – a story about an underprivileged young man with big dreams. We chose this title as it teaches our students the importance of perseverance, as well as being consistently genuine and honest every day. Aladdin has to learn to use his new-found power for good, and he becomes a better person in his pursuit of his goals. Our students learn the value in having strength of character and working hard to achieve their dreams.

The first level of instruction, Broadway Beginners, is for students ages 5-9. Broadway Beginners equips young performers with a basic toolkit of musical theatre skills – including singing, acting, and dancing. Students learn through interactive games, activities, scene work, and more. This course level will participate in the children’s ensemble for “Aladdin Jr.” They will perform in larger ensemble songs.

The second level, Broadway Bootcamp, is an open enrollment course for intermediate students ages 8-14. Students in this course will start their day with one hour of acting lessons followed by a one hour lesson of musical theatre dance and ballet. After a lunch break, students will have a three hour production rehearsal in the afternoon. This course level will provide the lead and supporting roles of “Aladdin Jr.”

Broadway Bound: Rent School Edition

Theatre Tulsa Academy prides itself in offering our older students challenging material to help them grow as the future leaders of our world. We have made a consistent effort to choose titles for our high school level programming that deal with pertinent societal issues, such as poverty, racial inequality, and gender identity.

Rent: School Edition is a Pulitzer Prize-winning work that deals with several issues still relevant today. With guided lessons, our students will learn about the impact of the AIDS epidemic, as well as the socio-economic hardships for urban people of color and disenfranchised youth, while preparing and performing one of the most groundbreaking and important musicals of the modern era.

Broadway Bound is an advanced course for ages 14-18. Broadway Bound focuses on advanced skills and techniques. To start their day, students will spend one hour each on acting and musical theatre dance classes, featuring materials geared toward advanced students and higher concept work. The students spend the last half of their day in a professional rehearsal atmosphere. This information will provide the knowledge needed to begin a vocational or academic career after they graduate high school. Broadway Bound performers will present Rent: School Edition.
